University of California, Berkeley – Greek Theater Seismic Upgrade

Project Details

Life-safety and accessibility upgrades plus seismic retrofit of historic theater located near the Hayward fault line. The challenge was to design and complete the renovation while preserving the historic fabric of the 100+ year old building, all within a condensed project schedule. All retrofit work was done below ground or within the voids of the colonnade structure. Sixteen jacks were inserted under the columns as part of the underpinning work. Scope covered renovation of the restrooms, new plaster, new copper roofing, upgrades to the existing life-safety systems, MEP systems, a new elevator and exit/access systems. Work was performed to meet LEED/CI equivalent standards. Sustainable aspects included recycling construction waste, using recycled content in the construction materials, water efficient fixtures, energy efficient lighting, indoor air quality preservation, and low VOC coatings and sealants.
